Wellington based artist Mica Still presents an exploration of debauchery; fleshing out the violent, absurd and often humorous elements of human nature. Still's trophy-like sculptural works depict dark scenes. The antagonists of these borderline domestic fables are animals, frozen in their acts of vice. Sensual mouths mock or scream; feeding, fighting, grinning and dancing. Set in their burlesque world they drink, smoke and lull through their indulgence. Beautifully detailed and strangely familiar these symbolic depictions are not soon put out of mind and fill the viewer with a sense of voyeurism and unnerve. Mica's paintings, also featuring in Wholesale Killers, are equally arresting. You feel as though you are looking at sound; at thought or feeling not paint. Linear silhouettes of animals and organs engaged in strange ritual spread out and taper off in a subconscious drawing kind of way. Geometric lines slice through them, veins or shadows interconnect the bright figures. When confronted with these animal forms, reflecting such human cognition, an underlying message is offered in Still's work: These creatures we live alongside are at our mercy. Wholesale Killers offers a compelling portrayal of humankind; our shadows, our insides, our dreams. Still's beautifully executed works are an illuminating foray into the subconscious. Animals and humans awash with sexual desire are layered into intimate works which you will encounter in this exhibition of new work. Held tight between the paws of dangerous bears, these delicate paintings are created by layering drawing, paint and resin as well as imagery. Human faces are obscured by bear, wolf or lion’s faces, as a little naughtiness is indulged in by all. Mica Still is inspired by the animals and symbols that appear in her vivid dreams. In this exhibition she is combining them with images from the real world. Using historical pornography as a reference, she is exploring what happens when we visit our desires, not so much dark desires, as naughty, playful, exploratory desires. We are not so far from animals and sex is part of that – playful as well as practical. “When we are in those moments we are different people, we are performative, lost in it, aggressive, dominant, passive, present.The animals project that energy –they embody the parts of the sex ritual/encounter that possess us in the moment.” Sex, like these paintings, is a simultaneously clumsy and hot experience. Come a little closer and you will see what’s really going. Whether you encounter danger or intimacy you must first approach to see the detail.
